Report
The shipping industry is highly competitive and the laws that govern it are complex. It has to adapt to ever-changing market, technological and political forces, and environmental constraints. As the industry adapts, so do the laws by which it is regulated. In a typical shipping business, commercial decisions have to be taken on a day-to-day basis and disputes are not uncommon.
Effective actions and reporting
Report
In shipping a quick reaction time is crucial; we fully recognise that it is not in our clients' best interests to have to wait for days for advice. We ensure that all queries and instructions are dealt with immediately they are received. If we do not have the solution to hand then we ensure that we have the means to obtain it.
Wet
Report
We have acted for owners, negotiated salvage compensation and negotiated with cargo interests and charterers. In addition, we have advised upon the rights of ancillary tugs to claim salvage. We have investigated the circumstances surrounding the loss of vessel at sea and established the unseaworthiness of the vessel and the owners' wilful misconduct.
Shipbuilding / repair
Report
We have reviewed and negotiated shipbuilding and ship-repair contracts in Europe and the Far East. We have also represented owners in disputes with shipyards, the most notable being the claims against the Boelwerf Shipyard in Temse, Belgium, which went into liquidation twice having only partially completed work on a client's cable-laying vessel.
